Your guide to buying a prom dress in the UK
Nearly every little girl spends her life dreaming about her Prom — the perfect party dress she’ll wear, the perfect date, and everyone admiring her
Shopping for a Prom dress should be one of the most fun, exciting, memorable moments of Prom preparation, but we all know it can also be a nightmare, trying to find a dress of the peg that fits you perfectly, there is always one part of a dress you wish was part of another, or just a little bit more fitted here and, a bit looser here, what if someone else has the same dress as you? Even worse…what if that person looks better than you in said dress.
The golden rule: A prom dress should look as if the young women is wearing the dress not the dress wearing her
What style and cut best suits your body type? Do you want a full dress or slim fitting? What kind of prom dresses are trending this season? We know, it’s complicated and overwhelming! And that’s why Tallulah Tennant put together this list of helpful tips to make your Prom dress adventures as painless as possible!
Try many styles, even the ones you thought wouldn’t suit you
What style is best for my body type? This is one of the most important questions you can ask at your fitting. An experienced consultant can give you unbiased and objective advice about what kind of dress will make you look your best on your Prom day. Don’t be afraid to try on a variety of different styles, even if they’re not what you had in mind when you walked in the door. You might be surprised about what you end up loving, even if it wasn’t your original idea of the perfect dress. Follow the golden rule for Prom dress shopping: Never judge a dress based off of what it looks like on the hanger, or in the magazines. And, as always, choose the dress that makes you feel the most beautiful and confident. Choose the dress that best flatters you. Love it, and own it, and don’t let the dress wear you.
Nothing will ever compare to having a custom fitted bespoke prom dress made (and yes, we are biased) with all the money you spend to look amazing on your prom night it would be barmy not to consider spending money on a dress that’s tailor made to your body and taste. With a ready to wear shop brought dress may end up liking the top half of one dress and the skirt of another and the fabric of the first one you tried on. A ready to wear dress will be made in the tens of thousands with huge production numbers. So why not create that ‘one dress’ to perfectly fit the girl who is going to wear it if your budget will allow for this.
On your marks get set…
Start shopping in January or February when the selection of prom dresses is the largest. Buy your dress a couple of months before your prom to have lots of time for alterations.
Talk about current trends
It’s important to discuss what trends are in style for the season, since fads tend to come and go. The consultant can then steer you in a certain direction depending on whether you want a dress that trendy or Formal.
Wear the underwear and bringing a pair of heels (if you plan on wearing heels) with you. That way you’ll get a real sense of what the dress will look like on your big night.
As fun as it is to go shopping in a large group of friends for this special once in a life time occasion you want all the emphasis to be on you, and what you need and want take one close friend with you or your mom who will give you the most honest opinion
Be aware of online deals
While you can find a good deal on the web, some online stores can be misleading. Buy from a reputable store or one you’ve used before. If the dress seems too good to be true, it probably is it might end up looking extremely cheap using low cost fabrics, that’s the wrong size and colour, and nothing like the picture advertised
